Two Burma army soldiers shot and killed three civilians while they were traveling on the Putao to Myitkyina road in war torn Kachin state on Monday, according to eye witnesses who claim the shooting was unprovoked. An additional person who was traveling with the group was badly injured.

According to an account given by witnesses the group of four Lisu villagers were driving their motorbikes south on the Putao to Myitkyina road when they were pulled over some 42 miles outside of Myitkyina. After stopping the travelers the soldiers took control of the motorbikes before opening fire on the unarmed men.

Two of the men were killed immediately and the third scummed to his injuries shortly afterward. The surviving man has been hospitalized in Myitkyina.

The soldiers who carried out the attack are believed to have come from Light Infantry Division from No. 33. The unit has been in the area since early December, local villagers say.

This week also saw Burma troops shell Laiza, the defacto capital of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO). Army shelling killed three civilians in Laiza on Monday.
